Performer Spotlight: Sockhead Syd @ The Bootstrappers

“A whale of a tale, and it’s all true…”

It’s okay, he doesn’t like you either.

Never trust a pirate. Rule #1. Because of course, they’ll always tell you “A Whale of a Tale”! And if there were ever a pirate to keep a keen eye on, it’s Sockhead Syd!

Sockhead Syd is a disreputable hooligan… who can play pretty much any instrument you give him – or he’s taken from you. He’s completely unlikeable – hello? Pirate? But he’s impossible not to thoroughly enjoy watching. Or maybe he’s just impossible. Sometimes it’s hard to tell.

If you see Syd with The Bootstrappers, he’s likely playing guitar. Or upright bass. Or pretty much anything with strings on it. Okay, he hasn’t pulled out a harp yet that I’m aware of, but I wouldn’t be surprised… His musical madness (and truly, great skill) is probably what’s kept him from walking the plank all these years!

Ta-da!

Ta-da!

Syd is one of the longest-serving swashbucklers in the park. He’s easily recognizable by the striped pink sock on his head. His name may or may not be a coincidence. You could try asking him, but he’d probably only belch in response. Not a real talker this one. But he can sing a pirate song all day long! Or at least until the grog runs out.

He has a tendency towards the outrageous. I’ve seen him climb on ledges to play – or even climb on his own instruments! And this is why you need to keep a close eye on this instigator – you never know what crazy thing he’ll do next!

A rare pensive moment for Syd – aboard a raft to Tom Sawyer’s Island.

This Bootstrapper is nothing but trouble… and a whole lot of talent too!

Is he your favorite performer?
