Performer Spotlight: Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert @ The Royal Theatre

“And it’s warm and real and bright…”

Sometimes people have two different aspects to their character, but one in particular may be the one you encounter or perceive most. Flynn Rider – aka Eugene Fitzherbert – may define this dichotomy. When you think of Flynn Rider, you probably think, “cocky, arrogant ne’er-do-well.” But you’d be forgetting who “Flynn Rider” started life as: just plain Eugene Fitzherbert. And it’s Eugene who Rapunzel truly fell for.

And like Rapunzel, it’s Eugene you’ll fall for, too, when you see this guy.

I had the pleasure of watching this guy a lot at the Royal Theatre while Tangled ran there (and hopefully the show will be returning at some point!), and there was a lot more of Eugene Fitzherbert’s sweetness than the swagitude of his alter ego Flynn Rider on that stage – but I think that was what made him so endearing.

I think it’s a lot easier to seem full of braggadocio than to reveal a genuine vulnerability and heart and this Eugene… excuse me… Flynn Rider… has a lot of heart.

Somehow even swagger looks sweet on this guy!

This is not to say that I didn’t see the Flynn in him too. There was enough of a twinkle in his eye to express the slight naughtiness of Flynn Rider. But really, Eugene still peeked through, especially in his affection for and great chemistry with Rapunzel.

Yet this big guy has more than enough heart to share with his adoring fans and he’s terrific and kind to all when at the Meet & Greet periodically held after the show. He’s particularly self-effacing and patient when all the little princesses are eager to meet Rapunzel.

I miss this guy a lot and the amiability he brings to the stage. I would be very glad to see him return to the Royal Theatre to tell his Tangled tale once again – as soon as the Frozen age there passes!

Is he your favorite performer?
