“You’ve got a friend in me!”
What is the Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue Stage Show?
An unheralded treat of a show is tucked away inside the Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue restaurant in a far corner of Disneyland’s Frontierland.
During your meal, you can be serenaded by some good old fashioned country music both from the stage and as the performers go out and wander amongst the tables to visit the guests.
They also will periodically invite the young ones in the crowd to come up on stage and join them for a song and dance.
Who are the performers?
Tex Tumbleweed and Miss Chris are a pair of old-school cowboy and cowgirl singers ala Gene Autry and Dale Evans.
When Miss Chris isn’t busy making sure everything is cooking properly in the kitchen out back, she sings for the guests while Tex joins in and accompanies her on the guitar. They play a mix of fun country songs like “Grandma’s Feather Bed” and Disney and Pixar classics like “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. They’re always up for celebrating guests’ birthdays with a song, too!
When and where can I find it?
Tex Tumbleweed and Miss Chris bring their down-home charm and musical talents to the stage in front of the picnic-style tables at the open-air Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue, found along Big Thunder Trail in Frontierland in Disneyland. They generally appear every 20-30 minutes with occasional breaks in between. You can ask a Cast Member at the restaurant when the next show will be.
Mousertainment Tip: If you didn’t make a reservation and the restaurant is fully booked for the day or you’d just like to stop by to enjoy the entertainment, you can either watch from just outside the railing surrounding the restaurant, or ask a Cast Member if you can stand and view from an inside corner of the area without taking up seating for the guests having their meals.
Why spotlight it?
Well, I reckon this little slice of country heaven is a precious respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the park. I can come here to enjoy the music and relaxed atmosphere under the shade of the trees.
Oh, yeah, and it’s great getting to eat the food here while you see a show!
Mousertainment Tip: If you’d like to stop and have a bite to eat at the Barbecue, but aren’t up for the full “all you can eat” meal, if there’s still seating available, you can actually go here and just order a dessert. But true to the big-eats style here, the desserts are meant to be shared!
I’m a big fan of this lesser-known performance and highly recommend stopping by!
Have you been to the Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue to see Tex Tumbleweed and Miss Chris perform? If so, did you enjoy having a meal with a show?
Update 1/08/16: It was with a very sad heart tonight that I had my last ever meal at the Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue. It was my last time to see Tex Tumbleweed and Miss Chris’s show, as the Barbecue will close permanently on Sunday, January 10th, to make way for construction of Star Wars Land. I would like to thank Tex and Miss Chris for so many hours of joy during their tenure there. And with much love and quite a few tears, I wish them “Happy Trails”…
