The Walt Disney World Resort doesn’t have a lot of mid-century set shows, but one that immediately came to mind when I was thinking about the era of Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline and The Silver Lake Sisters at Disney California Adventure was at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!
What is the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!?
Taking a cue from Universal Studios’ classic “behind the movie magic” type of stunt attractions, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! runs through some exciting movie stunts and then stops to show you exactly how they’re made by Hollywood production and stunt professionals.
You’ll get to see some iconic Indiana Jones moments – such as stealing the idol and running from the rolling boulder – along with some big fight scenes complete with villains, vehicles and even a World War II-era airplane!
Like the Jedi Training Academy, there is no music in this show beyond some movie-type scoring, but it’s a fun, exciting and informative show for all ages.
Who are the performers?
Along with stunt performers standing in for main characters Indiana Jones and Marion, there are assorted bad guys (also stuntmen), along with the “production crew” who are there to tell you all about the magic of moviemaking! There is even an opportunity or two for some volunteer audience participation if you happen to get picked!
When and where can I find it?
The half-hour long Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! plays daily at Echo Lake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort – weather permitting. Check your daily Times Guide for the schedule or use My Disney Experience to book a FastPass+.
Mousertainment Tip: Because this show takes place partly outdoors in often-rainy Florida, the show can be canceled when the ground gets too wet for it to be safely performed. (Fellow Disney’s Hollywood Studios stunt show Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show – to be spotlighted another day – is also affected by such weather conditions.) So if it’s raining, it might help to double-check with a Cast Member at the location or with Guest Services that day to make sure the show is still on for the scheduled time you want to see it!
Why spotlight it?
I think this is one of the best quality-entertainment shows at Walt Disney World and is certainly a highlight at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It reminds me of the days when Universal Studios used to be more about HOW movies were made rather than thrill rides!
While Disney’s Hollywood Studios also seems to be letting go of much of its “behind the scenes” theming as well (and therefore this show may not have too long of a future left to it – so I’d recommend seeing it sooner rather than waiting for later) for more “inside the movies” immersive experiences, this is still a great taste of how Hollywood made some of their most memorable films with a combination of movie magic tricks and some really talented professionals!
Have you been to the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!? Did you enjoy the action or the educational aspects more?
