“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…”
What is Flag Retreat at the Magic Kingdom?
While Flag Retreat at Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom shares some definite similarities to the Disneyland version of Flag Retreat, there are some unique differences that make it stand apart from its West Coast counterpart.
Prior to the lowering of the flag for the evening, the Dapper Dans (and some special young guests) lead the crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
And rather than inviting up all current and former military in attendance, the park selects an official Veteran of the Day who is chosen to bear the folded flag and be specially recognized for their service.
As the Dapper Dans of the Magic Kingdom do not wear head mics like their Disneyland brethren do, they are provided with hand-held microphones for the duration of the event.
There are also location differences – at the more intimate Disneyland Town Square, the Disneyland Band immediately joins the Dapper Dans near the flagpole. Whereas at the Magic Kingdom, the Main Street Philharmonic start playing from the train station before joining the Dapper Dans in the center of Town Square.
Who are the performers?
Similar to the West Coast, it is the Magic Kingdom Security Color Guard who lower and fold the flag as the Dapper Dans sing patriotic songs to the music of the Main Street Philharmonic.
But the participants also usually include children selected to lead the Pledge of Allegiance as well as the representative Veteran of the Day.
When and where can I find it?
Flag Retreat is performed once daily in the late afternoon/early evening in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A. The time may change depending on the season and sundown, so be sure to check your Times Guide for the schedule.
Why spotlight it?
When I visited the Magic Kingdom, I loved observing the differences between the East Coast and West Coast versions of Flag Retreat.
But ultimately, it’s the same wonderful opportunity to pay respect to our flag, our country, our military and our freedom.
Again, an experience that should not be missed!
