D23 Expo 2013 Flashback: The Walt Disney Archives Display – Mary Poppins

Last week I featured some of items shown at the Walt Disney Archives display at the D23 Expo 2015. Today, I’m going to take a quick look back at the Archives display for D23 Expo 2013 – which happened to feature quite a few pieces from Mary Poppins!

As I recall, the line for the Walt Disney Archives display at the 2013 Expo was much shorter in length. I don’t think I waited longer than half an hour to enter, but they also only allowed a certain amount of people in at a time. I am actually appreciative that they’ve done this at all of the Expos as it allows time and space to view each part of the exhibit without feeling overcrowded or rushed.

The display area seemed larger in 2015 than it was in 2013, but there were some definite treasures to be seen back in 2013 too!

One large section was dedicated entirely to Mary Poppins.

There were two of the carousel horses from the “Jolly Holiday” sequence:

Seeing Mary Poppins and Bert perform with the Pearly Band at Disneyland Park is always Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Continuing the celebration of Mary Poppins this week, let’s take a look at the various places one can find Mary Poppins and her friends at the parks!

Here are some places to check!

  • While Mary Poppins and Bert can often be found strolling around Main Street, U.S.A. as well as in Fantasyland, the best place to find them stopping for a Meet & Greet is at the Refreshment Corner Café (or “Coke Corner” as it’s often called). If they are going to be out for the day, this is the first place I’d look for them as they tend to stand outside next to the Ragtime Piano to pose for pictures and sign autographs.

Performer Spotlight: Bert @ Pearly Band

“Oh, it’s a jolly holiday with you, Bert – gentlemen like you are few!”

Worth a thousand words…

Worth a thousand words…

While Mary Poppins might be practically perfect in every way, with all due respect to her, this guy is utterly perfect.

Bert is someone who whenever I see him at Disneyland Park brightens my day an extra 100%. (Extra 100%? Hmph, who needs math anyway?)

Whether he’s wandering the park with Mary Poppins or out strolling on his own, or doing a meet and greet at Coke Corner (often where he and Mary Poppins can be found together!) or best of all performing with the Pearly Band – he is just magical. Amazing. Perfect. Bert.

A super-rare appearance by one of the film’s Penguin Waiters who I happened to catch doing a Meet & Greet along with Bert and Mary Poppins one day at Coke Corner!

Rarely have I encountered anyone who steps right out of a movie and into the world like this guy has. He is a bundle of happiness and joy and sunshine rolled up in a cockney accent and a summery suit! Seeing him interacting with guests is always wonderful as his warmth and friendliness charms everyone he greets, while his cheery grin lights up any location he’s found at. Continue reading

“Your heart starts beatin’ like a big brass band!”

51 years ago this week, a movie that was practically perfect in every way premiered: Mary Poppins! In honor of this milestone, I thought it would be a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time to take a look at several wonderful ways that this film and its characters are celebrated in the parks!

Today, we’ll visit with the Pearly Band!

What is the Pearly Band?

Originally seen in the animated sequence of the film, the Pearly Band at Disneyland Park is a fun, colorful “big brass band” that plays music from the beloved movie.

At times they are joined by Mary Poppins and Bert who sing and dance along – dressed in their Jolly Holiday finest of course!

Who are the performers?

The Pearly Band is made up of seven musicians playing various brass instruments and drums, with one performer usually leading the group and addressing the crowd.

The Pearly Band members wear costumes that make them look like a rainbow when they perform together – so bright and happy to see!

When and where can I find them? Continue reading

As exciting as the exhibits of the attraction vehicles were, sometimes it’s the little things that are even more interesting.

Now I get to share some pictures of what to me was the showstopper of the D23 Expo 2015: the Walt Disney Archives display.

The Archives always put together some terrific material, but I really think this particular exhibit – themed of course to Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary – was really extraordinary.

And I’m glad it was because I had to wait an hour in line just to enter as they only permitted a few people inside at a time!

But once inside, it was incredible!

One of the first amazing attraction pieces I was thrilled to encounter was this 1980’s prototype Caterpillar vehicle for that era’s refurbishment of the Alice in Wonderland attraction:

On the other side of this display area was the current version of the vehicle we know and love along with a beautiful Alice audio-animatronic figure!

Along with movie costume displays, there were also promotional areas at the Expo set up for upcoming films such as the animated Zootopia:

As well as this awesome prop vehicle from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy:
