“Your heart starts beatin’ like a big brass band!”
51 years ago this week, a movie that was practically perfect in every way premiered: Mary Poppins! In honor of this milestone, I thought it would be a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time to take a look at several wonderful ways that this film and its characters are celebrated in the parks!
Today, we’ll visit with the Pearly Band!
What is the Pearly Band?
Originally seen in the animated sequence of the film, the Pearly Band at Disneyland Park is a fun, colorful “big brass band” that plays music from the beloved movie.
At times they are joined by Mary Poppins and Bert who sing and dance along – dressed in their Jolly Holiday finest of course!
Who are the performers?
The Pearly Band is made up of seven musicians playing various brass instruments and drums, with one performer usually leading the group and addressing the crowd.
The Pearly Band members wear costumes that make them look like a rainbow when they perform together – so bright and happy to see!
When and where can I find them?
Earlier this summer, I could only find the Pearly Band playing in Fantasyland for some reason. And then they disappeared off the schedule for a few weeks entirely which gave me a scare! Happily I can report that they are back to appearing at their wonderful Sleeping Beauty Castle forecourt location where they perform with Mary Poppins and Bert!
I’m not sure whether they’re also still performing in Fantasyland but I had previously found them there near the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique around the back side of the castle.
They only seem to have two or three sets a day right now and are only out a few days per week, so check your Entertainment Times Guide for the schedule!
Why spotlight them?
First of all – who doesn’t love the glorious Sherman Brothers’ songs from Mary Poppins?! Plus I always want to support the live entertainment at the park.
But for me, what makes the Pearly Band performances extra special is seeing them play with Mary Poppins and Bert – these two always make a holiday extra jolly! And really seeing them singing and dancing with the Pearly Band is like watching the movie truly come to life before your eyes! The choreography is wonderful as is the musical performance itself. Plus there is an opportunity for some of the young ones in the crowd to join in and dance with Mary Poppins and Bert too!
No Disney or Mary Poppins fan should miss out on this absolutely magical experience!
Have you seen Mary Poppins and Bert with the Pearly Band? What is your favorite song that they perform?
