What is the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off!?
At this Marvel-ous show, guests young and old get the opportunity to boogie with Star-Lord and Gamora as they try to dance their way out of trouble with the Collector!
Star-Lord is his usual insouciant self as he tries to recover a boombox from under the Collector’s nose (or attraction?). Gamora just wants to get out of there while Rocket warns them over the loudspeaker to hurry up!
But of course, it’s never easy, and the Collector starts tracking the Guardians soon after they arrive. So when Rocket suggests using a lot of movement to fool the tracking system, Star-Lord starts a Dance-Off with the crowd and the musical merriment begins!
Who are the performers?
Star-Lord and Gamora from the Guardians of the Galaxy, along with some cast members invite guests from the crowd to show off their best dance moves!
And if you’re lucky, Groot may show up, too!
Mousertainment Tip: At the beginning of the summer, I saw Groot at each Dance Off show, but recently I was there and there was no Groot and someone said he may no longer be at every set. So if Groot is a priority for you to see – and dance with! – I’d suggest stopping by a few minutes prior to the show and asking one of the Cast Members stationed in front of the area if Groot will be joining for that set.
When and where can I find it?
The Dance Off currently runs daily in front of the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction (aka the former Tower of Terror) in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure. It tends to play during the morning through mid-afternoon – check your daily Entertainment Times Guide or the Disneyland app for the schedule.
While this show was added specifically for the Summer of Heroes event, I’m REALLY hoping it gets extended! But in case it doesn’t, be sure to check it out before the event ends on September 10th!
Why spotlight it?
I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH! Okay, in large part to the pure awesomeness of Star-Lord and Gamora, but also for the music, the dancing and the energy it adds to this Guardians-fueled area of the park.
I think the interactivity and spontaneity in this show – especially as Star-Lord improvises humorous responses to the crowd and the dancers – make this such a unique and fun offering! Having Star-Lord and Gamora enter and exit by walking right through the audience is always a thrill and it so fits the casual/breaking-the-rules nature of the characters. Plus I think it’s fantastic that both young ones AND adults could get pulled up to dance with the characters – especially if you’re standing close to the front and show a lot of enthusiasm (hint!).
The soundtrack of music played is really well-chosen and appropriately themed 70’s pop and rock and I’m always dancing in the crowd even though I’ve only been picked to go up once (and sadly didn’t get to dance with Star-Lord at the time AND there was unfortunately no PhotoPass photographer in the area taking pictures at that set so I have no record of it! *sniff*).
This is not only my favorite experience introduced for the Summer of Heroes, but it’s currently one of my most favorite shows at the resort. It has great repeatability for watching it, no matter your age, and I try to get to it at least once – or even twice! – on each visit to the park.
This is really the one thing I recommend above all others at the Summer of Heroes. Do yourself a favor and go put your dance pants on and enjoy this super fun show!
No, but seriously… Star-Lord…

Have you seen the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance-Off! show this summer? Were you picked to dance with Star-Lord and Gamora?
Update 8/26/17: This show has been extended on the park calendar through September 30th! Go, go, go!
Update 9/2/17: Rock ‘n roll! The show is now on the schedule into October as well. So hopefully that means it’s here to stay for a long run! One note though – I’ve only found Groot joining the show early in the mornings most days, otherwise he is only doing separate Meet & Greets.
